What is Risk ?

Digital risk factors associated with their interests and activities

Type of risk: Extremism

An algorithm is a set of rules designed to produce an outcome or solve a problem.

On popular social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, algorithms respond to a user's data to control the content they see. For example, a content algorithm might show more sporting videos to someone if they have watched or liked sports content before. This is intended to keep users engaged and using the platform.

Social media algorithms can be very accurate at predicting what a user likes. This can be based on:

  • content watched
  • content skipped
  • content shared or reposted
  • channels or accounts followed
  • likes or comments

Small interactions with risky or harmful content, like violent or misogynistic videos, can mean that over time a user gradually sees more and more similar content.
